Rural Schools and Community Development
Rural schools are facing from many issues with depressed rural economies and declining enrollment.  But maybe there is potential for regeneration through their community roles?
Rural schools often offer as good an education to students as they would receive in a more urban area. Indeed, data from Statistics Canada indicates that there is no statistical difference in performance at most levels between urban and rural students.
However enrollments are declining, often below levels that are sustainable due to educational economics and the fiscal situation of rural boards. The boards’ response is often to consolidate small schools into larger ones...usually resulting in longer travel to school journeys for students...and closure of key community assets.
Yet how can school boards fight against these fiscal impediments and engage the broader community in order to keep their schools open?
