Business Plan and Community Economic Impact Assessment for
new Athletics and Recreation Complex
McMaster University Athletics and Recreation Department have been key supporters of sport tourism in Hamilton. Their facilities are often the venues for events, and the campus would be the obvious venue for facility expansion if Hamilton were to host a really major event such as the Commonwealth Games.
At the same time, their existing facility was almost 40 years old and was bursting at the seams (it was designed for a campus population that was less than half the 2005 enrollment). A plan for its expansion was well underway as YTA worked on a new sport tourism strategy for Tourism Hamilton.
YTA, with support from Paul Rollo & Associates, were asked to develop a business plan and community economic impact assessment for the new facility.
The new $43m building, fields and 7,000 seat stadium will be completed in 2006.  At the heart of the business plan is a complex spreadsheet modeling all program, membership, student, capital and operating costs and revenues to 2014.  The Community Economic Impact Assessment focuses on the benefit that will be created in the community in terms of event hosting, community wellness, etc.
